Multisensory Curriculum Recommendations

With so many wonderful multisensory programs out there, it has never been easier to give your child a delightful, hands-on education. Here are our favorites for language arts, math and science!

Language Arts/Reading/Phonics

Our Pick: PRIDE Reading Program

PRIDE offers a comprehensive Orton-Gillingham structured literacy curriculum that uses multisensory activities and systematic phonics to make reading fun for children of all learning styles. It is especially beneficial for students with dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, speech and language deficits, and other learning differences. (Learn more about the Orton-Gillingham methodology here.)

Two of our children have enjoyed PRIDE Reading Beginning Letters and Sounds and our preschooler is eager to start it for herself. This fall will kickoff our second time using the Yellow book (level 1) as we begin it with our middle daughter.

Beginning Letters and Sounds is a wonderful start for an eager Pre-K student or for your Kindergartener. Our oldest began this level in his Kindergarten year and flew through it in just 5 months (he's crazy word smart, so no wonder) but our middle girl eased her way through over her whole kinder year.

In my research phase, I was torn between PRIDE and All About Reading, but went with PRIDE because of the amazing support the program offers parents. There is a video training course for you to complete prior to starting to show you how to facilitate each of the exercises. Their team is also available to help you troubleshoot any bumps in the road you may encounter with your child as you go. Plus, they offer tutoring!

Since it was my first time ever teaching someone how to read, I loved the idea of having such a strong support system. But I didn't even need it! The program is extremely straightforward and predictably patterned, so the children get the hang of it pretty quickly and can confidently know what to expect. We haven't looked back!

Plus there's a free placement quiz to help you select the correct level. Easy breezy!

Math

Our Pick: Math With Confidence by Kate Snow

Math With Confidence has been such a fun addition to our homeschool days! It's a scripted, open-and-go program with short, lively lessons and multisensory activities. There are a total of 4 lessons per week, for 32 weeks. The lessons are scripted and short, and the materials are pretty much all household items. The teacher's guide includes copy-ready templates for anything you need (like a 10 frame, pattern block shapes, etc.) so you really can get away without buying much more than the teacher's guide and student workbook... which are already quite affordable! (Literally a fraction of the cost of some other multisensory programs we considered.)

The games are a mix of nostalgic classics with fun twists (like the war card came) and activities created just for this curriculum. With that in mind, it does require hands-on involvement from either a parent or older sibling (which was perfect for us. Our first grader still remembered the Kindergarten games and was able to play with his sister if/when he wanted, or if I needed him to take over for a round while I attended to our toddler).

My favorite part about this program though is the list of recommended picture books that accompanies each level! There's one per week, and they're totally optional. I got the ones I could from our library and didn't stress about the rest (though inter-library loan was clutch for some of the older titles.) We opted to read them on Fridays, which are our project/practical life days.

Science/Nature Study

Our Pick: Our program! Creation Exploration: A to Z

But of course! Creation Exploration: A to Z is our flagship program that mixes literature-based and hands-on learning to introduce your child to science and nature study while anchoring them to Scripture. Each of the 31 units (1 per letter + 5 alternate vowel sounds) reinforces literacy, math and social studies while exploring the science behind each presented aspect of the natural world.

The program follows the creation account and identifies something seen in nature and mentioned in the Bible for each letter of the alphabet (including both short and long vowel sounds). The Scripture Literacy Flashcards feature something God created for each letter and include the verse where it is described (printed fully on the back.) You'll also explore what each element of creation reveals about God's nature through our Christ-like Character Cards.

We've found that the combination of these programs makes for a beautiful Kindergarten and first grade homeschool experience that sparks excitement, nurtures curiosity and fosters connection between you and your little learner.

PS: If it's preschool you're looking for, be sure to check out our Creation Discovery program. It's the comprehensive, Christ-centered preschool experience you'll wish you had when you were little!
